I have a gigantic amount of seashells that we picked up at long-ago garage
sale.

Some are pretty banged up and not ideal for display. I wasnt on planning to
put too many in the tank anyway.

I was wondering: Is it a good idea to smash up a bunch of Shells into small
pieces and add it to the sand bed? Im planning on getting Jawfish once the
tank is cycled.

ps---I finally put some water in the tank ! :)

Smashing the shells into pieces would be OK, I wouldn't put whole shells
in there
because it's just something else for algae to grow on. And will get
nasty looking after a while.

Hey there....
I wouldn't put anything in my tank that I bought at a garage sale, but
if you're 100% sure that these are real sea shells (and not metallic or
anything corrosive or with toxic paint) you can boil them first to
disinfect them and then put them in your tank.
Please be warned though your system can be contaminated by things like
paint or rust that might be on these 'seashells'.
Best of luck,

Actually rust is not something to be scared of, but yes
there is risk that something could have been put on the
shells. They could be soaked in fresh water in a bucket
for a long time to reduce that risk.
