I have a 75 Gal tank with 65 lbs live rock in the main tank and 10 lbs in the 20 gal sump and the tank has been up for 8 months. I have test the water (and had the local LFS test) and all levels look great. The question I have is love rock and a skimmer good enough filtration? The guy at the store said that unless you are stocking coral it is not. That makes no sence to me.

I agree with Billy. I use a piece of sponge only for a mechanical filter to cathc coarse stuff. My fuge, and live rock and sand and macro algae takes care of everything and I run only the HOB filters and a skimmer.....All my tanks are reef with fish. Yep live rock, live sand, and a skimmer will filter it all. Wayne Sallee Wayne's Pets Wayne@WaynesPets.com ~Roy~ wrote on 2/19/2006 9:57 PM: > I agree with Billy. I have 2 tanks *with* corals where live rock and a skimmer is all the 'filtration' I use. Some people add mechanical filtration for particulates, but it's not generally *required*, and the filter media can sometimes contribute to nitrate issues. He said "unless you're stocking corals..." and I would say that filtration would need to be higher, due the sensitivity of most corals. With 65lbs of LR in a 75g, I think your setup should be just fine! The live rock takes care of the biological filtration, and the skimmer removes the dissolved organic compounds. billy
