I read that the largest selling fish in numbers in the US is the neon tetra.

Working in a chain pet store I'd have to agree. Either that or the male

In my experience, if you are going by sheer numbers, the feeder comet
goldfish (Carassius auratus) outsells almost all other aquarium fish added
together.

Well if you're going to count animals sold as food I bet more brine shrimp
are sold than feeder goldfish.

Nice pic. I agree, it doesn't really matter which fish would win. No decent
aquarist would put them in the same tank anyway.

The meanest fish I've kept are "Cichlasoma" salvini . A male salvini was
only about 7 inches long when he bit me bad enough to require 5 stitches. He
was an evil little bastard. Beautiful tho.

A bite from my black piranha or your Red Devil ? OUCH ! I don't wanna go
there !

On the other hand, my Oscar bites me a couple times a week when I feed him
(her? ). Sometimes it hurts a little, but nothing compared to that mean ass
little salvini...

Of course, when my Oscar bites me it's because it aimed for the food in my
hand and missed.
Yup, sometimes I can be a dumbass. ;-)

I can't imagine being bitten by this RD, he's taken the hair off my arms
before because I couldn't pull my hand out fast enough... it was funny to
see him eating at my hair, like it was food... then again, I did see a RBP
eat a mouse once... quite disgusting... there's a video out there called
"Got Mice.mpg" that shows it...

My bowfin would scare your fish so bad they would jump out of the tank. LOL
Bowfin are tough, they have teath that look like a dogs teeth. Hence the name
"Dog Fish". I actually had a large flathead catfish once that was in his own
tank. A guy gave me a dozen 3" piranha and I had no place to put them that
night so I put them in with the catfish until the next day when I could set up
a new tank for them. they harrased the catfish so bad it was pitiful. I left
the room to go ahead and set up the new tank that evening so my catfish
wouldn't be eaten. I came back about 45 minutes later to a very fat catfish and
no pirahna!

I breed dwarf crayfish for planted aquariums and grow trees in aquariums.

Don't rub it in but no not yet, I am nothing if not tenacious. I've been
keeping fish for 40 years and plants for almost that long. I try to combin the
too as much as possible. I still have the 125 gallon aquarium set up and
waiting for my shovelnose sturgeon fingerling. maybe one day. I really want to
breed them eventually. i have an aquaculture license and breed several species
of fish.

It seems I have to say it again , so here goes ...

Quoting a website :
" Serrasalmus Rhombeus (The Black Piranha). The S.Rhombeus, better known as
the Rhom, is a great fish to keep. They have the pointed features associated
with the Serrasalmus genus leading up to a thick high back under the dorsal
fin. The fish has amazing red eyes, which it is famous for and is a
legendary eater. The S.Rhombeus is not a particularly difficult fish to keep
but must be kept on its own, so if you are looking to keep a solitary fish,
this is your boy. The main reason is that this fish does not mix with any
other fish, including it's own breed. They will attack and kill any other
fish in the tank. Because of this, they are a very popular fish for the
hobbyist to keep but will need large housing due to their size. The fish is
found all over the Amazon and Orinoco waterways and can grow to 22" in
maturity. Again large housing will be needed if the fish is to grow to this
size and an adult S.Rhombeus can easily amputate a human hand at the wrist
in 2 or 3 bites, so be careful. "

Are you sure an Oscar or Red Devils can handle one of these ?

Oscars and Red Devils have smaller teeth and are slower... I've kept all 3
species.
Oscars and other cichlids are more intresting, and more pet-like. But as far
as fighting / eating ability Oscars and Red devils both lose to the black
piranha. Red bellies or other piranha species would be feeders for Red
Devils , true. But not the Rhombeus...
