Subject: Fantail fry

I noticed my fish were spawning & I rescued a bit of pond weed with some
eggs attached & brought them inside in a one foot tank with some of the pond
water.
A few hatched 2 days ago.
They are very small & swim erratically & attach themselves to the glass on
the side of the tank.
What can I expect in the next few days, & what & when do I need to feed them
as it would be nice if a few of them got to grow up rather than just die.
I'm quite OK with livebearer babies in my tropical tank but these a SO
small!
HELP!
Thanks in advance to all you folks who know all about it.
BTW I live in Sydney, OZ & it is spring right now & fairly cool, but it can
also get very hot.

I raised newborn koi and goldfish with a watery mix of hard boiled egg yolk
mixed with powdered fry food and green-water. The greener the water the
better. They do much better outdoors in roomy old kiddy pools or old horse
troughs. I never could get an infusuria culture going. It always turned
into a bacterial and fungus infested smelly mess.

I tried the boiled egg yolk method twice and it killed them off
both times. I've no doubt it works, but the water messes up quickly
if you overfeed (which I probably did) very quickly!

## I've heard about people having problems with eggyolk. However it worked
wonderfully for me. They grew quickly and as soon as possible I switched
them to a ground fish food.

## This is true. You must be careful of the amounts fed. Also, when
they're raised in greenwater, with a lot of water plants and an already
established nitrogen cycle, overfeeding isn't the problem it is indoors.
I've given up raising GF (and now koi) indoors.

Well guys thanks for all your tips!
The infusoria didn't turn out, maybe it's too hot here?
I've been feeding them with a drop or two of the egg yolk mixture & so far
the water doesn't smell & is still reasonably clear.
A couple seem not to be eating as the others have got bigger already & the
anorexics although still alive a nowhere near as big as their
brothers/sisters.
Anyway they are a week old now & I can't find anywhere to put them outside
where they would be safe from sun, heat & any other threats, so still in the
house!
They are still VERY small compared to livebearer fry that I am more used to.

Pat,
Keep the environment VERY clean. If you change any water
use a dechlorinator and match the temp.
Infusoria is good for them. You can make it by adding a lettuce leave
to a jar of water, closing the lid and leaving it in the sunlight
for a few days, the water will turn a murky green. Feed this sparingly.
Also crushed flakes/pellets will be ok - feed sparingly so that
you don't pollute the water.
