I recently had a bad bout with velvet in one of my tanks. 2 of the fishies have died and the 3rd is looking bad, but holding on so far. He has been moved to a hospital tank. 1) Should the home tank be disinfected? 2) If YES to 1) use chlorox? 3) How much chlorox? 4) What do you do to/with the bio wheel? 5) Do I run the filter (with no pads) during disenfecting? I do also have PP but again wonder about the bio wheel? Thanxx Bill Brister - Austin, Texas

10% chlorox solution will kill anything thats in the tank, make sure you do all things that were in the tank, gravel, pump, filter air line, airstones, decoratins etc etc and of course the bio wheel......Its not a big deal to get residual chlorox out of a system, with the use of chlorine remover. Using too much conditioner is as bad as not enough. Its easy enough to put the gravel in a bucket to treat seperately, with chlorox, and rinse fairly well. Odds are if left overnight chlorine will just about be nil, so regular dose of chlorine remover ./ water conditioner will work just fine.Once yu start up the filter, any remaining will be removed by the carbon and that amout should not impair the carbon at all......within 3 or 4 days it should be fine to put fish back in as long as you do not overlaod it initially until the bio filter gets up to par..If you have some other water form another tank, yu can always seed the tank with it as well. I have typically just used a filter mat, but I have heard many times Bio Spira is the ONLY cycling product that works. You can use Potassium Permanganate which is easily rinsed out or BLEACH which isn't quite as easy to remove from gravel. Rinse like mad and use several times the recommended dose of dechlor' when you fill it. Run it for at least 48 hours before adding a fish. I don't use bleach anymore but it will kill the parasites and any bacterial diseases. Some people use a very strong salt solution but that may not get flukes. > 2) If YES to 1) use chlorox? > > 3) How much chlorox? > > 4) What do you do to/with the bio wheel? > > 5) Do I run the filter (with no pads) during disenfecting? > > I do also have PP but again wonder about the bio wheel? ## I would disinfect that as well. Why disinfect everything else and not that? Anything can be living on it. Koi-Lo.... frugal ponding since 1995...
