If the water has a PH of less than 7 how can I correct it?

Try baking soda to increase pH (and also buffer).

how much less, what is the pH out of the tap, what is the hardness of the water?
how many fish, how big a tank, how long been running, got gravel?

Are you changing any water and vacumming the gravel?
