Subject: Cleaning an old tank

What should i sue to clean an old tank?
the tank in question was free, i just had to pick it up, it's about 10
gallon and i figure would make a nice enough hospital tank should i need
it. it's a bit mucky (largely dust, few waterks).
what should i use to clean it out, do i need to stick to just plain
waster, or would any kind of chemical be okay if i rinse thoroughly, or
use disinfectant of some kind?

p.s. thanks to the people who suggested splitting my goldfish and
paradise fish p, they live in seperate tanks now and the goldfish's fins
have almost all grown back completely :)

Other posters have already made many good suggestions on cleaning the tank.
I'd add to this a suggestion that you run a bead of sealant along all of the
seams on the inside after you clean the tank. Old tanks / garage sale tanks
/ hand me down tanks / tanks that have been in storage for a while sometimes
leak :)

Read of a top Black Moor breeder who uses Dettol (well rinsed of course).

I would go with vinegar. Put some water in the bottom of the tank, and
add some vinegar to it. Then take a cloth and wipe where ever you need
to clean. Then rinse it out well with water and that should work!
Vinegar works wonders for cleaning all sorts of stuff!

I clean them with bleach and rinse several times before use. If there's
mineral deposits I use Lime-A-Way to dissolve them, then bleach, rise well
and use. :-)

My older woman friend by the name of jeannette has had awesome results with
vinegar, just make sure you rinse the tank out good before using after
cleaning with vinegar. Her all glass tank looked brand new when I saw it
after she cleaned it. Bleach might work for you but make sure you thoroughly
rinse the tank out and off and it's a good idea to wipe it with
dechlorinator and rinse one more time before using it. Good luck and later!
