Subject: Cher has a zit

No, this isn't celebrity spam- last night when I came home, Cher the
shubunkin had a volcano on her side, spewing white yuck. It didn't inhibite
her usual piggy feeding. This AM, the volcano is still visible as a
swelling, but it is no longer spewing. It's the only spot on her, the other
three fish are fine, water perameters fine although due for a change today
just because it's when I usually do it.
Is this "pimple" a dangerous thing? do I treat it with something (something
I'm sure to not have here at home)? Do I squeeze it? (just kidding there)
Will the other fish make fun of her?
And an aside- Melafix seems to be mostly tea tree oil, which I DO have here
at home. Can it be used in a pinch?

This PM- I went and got some Melafix, because I was worried that I needed to
do something. The LFS woman told me this was a fine thing, and to not just
put it in the water, but to capture the fish and put a drop of it on the
sore.
So, after doing a water change and putting inthe Melafix, I did this.
Now poor Cher is sitting on the bottom with her fins clamped. I've never
seen this before, but it's sure unmistakable. Before doing this, she wasn't
as sprightly as last night or even this morning, but not sitting clamped.
She looks miserable. Whoops- she just got up and started eating something on
the plant. But her fins are still clamped.
Was this a stupid thing to do? And- this may be the problem- I didn't shake
the bottle thoroughly before getting the drop out to put on Cher. Since it
seems to be an oil/water suspension, this probably resulted in the drop
being higher strenght than if I'd shook it better. (I'd shook it some, but
not till frothy)
HELP! Have I killed my favorite fish???? Is there anything I can do?

[stepping aside the debate on tea tree oil for treating goldfish]
If you had gone to the work to catch the fish, a topical antibiotic
ointment (neosporin, et al) probably would have been better...

melafix is precisely the wrong thing to put on a wound at this stage.
move the fish to a bowl of the tank water and gently express any pus, clean with
peroxide and rub some triple antibiotic creme into the area and return to the tank,
add 1 teaspoon salt per 5 gallons, no additives, dissolve first, add slowly.
now. this is from the inside out, so get some antibiotic food. romet B is best,
order it online. or, get kanamycin, mix with a tablespoon of water, soak a bit of
food in it and feed to the fish. this can also be put into the water. but you
definitely want to feed antibiotics for a couple weeks minimum.
continue with antibiotic creme, you dont want the wound to close until it is healing
from the inside out or bacteria will be trapped inside. Ingrid

Well, bugger all. I do have antibiotic creme- for humans- right here.
I was told at one store they couldn't any listing for antibiotic feed (I
even gave them the name Romet); the other store said that they were not
allowed to sell antibiotic feed anymore because of the shelf life, making it
sound like some kind of government reg. So I gave up on that.
Hmm.. I can't get back into town for a few days; would acyn-two work in
the feed?
Glad to report that Cher is much better. After an hour or so of lurking on
the bottom with her dorsal flat, she started swimming around and her dorsal
came up. When I walked up to the tank to look closer, she sank to the bottom
and clamped her fins, giving me the "I HATE you" look. By dinner time, she
was all over, eating like her usual piggy self, shoving Morticia out of the
way. This AM, the swelling is down quite a bit- about half the size it was.
At the moment, she is ripping some anacaris apart.

You need to get yourself a DrsFosterSmith.com aquatic catalog. Romet is not
generally available. It is an antibiotic food used in the Aquaculture
community and generally unavailable to the general public without knowing
exactly where to buy it from and usually you have to buy it in 5 or 10 pound
bags/containers. The other thing you have to remember, that Ingrid either
doesn't know or doesn't tell people, is that there are two Romets, one is
Romet B and the other is Romet 30; they are similar but different.
As a general medicated food, Medigold is a good food that can be obtained
from Rick Hess's Goldfishconnection.com. It is a very good food.

Yeesh, sure hope the Romet has a good shelf life- 5 or 10 lbs?!?! Sturgeon
size servings! I'll get myself one of those catalogs, tho.

The only real problem with buying it from Ken or any one for that matter who
is selling it in small quantities, is how is that person getting it and how
long his supplies sit before they are turned over. This is no reflection on
the individual, but if he is buying it in quantity and repackaging it and
reselling in smaller quantities there may be a problem with quality from
long term storage. Just something to think about.
