Subject: constant algae

I have an 8 gallon tank with some Gold X-Ray Tetras and Red Minor Serpae
Tetras. I have a 125 Biowheel for filtration. The lights are on only 6
hours a day. I do water changes every 2-3 weeks. It gets constant algae.
Brighter green algae that covers the glass and (fake) plants (comes off
fairly easy). Also if I go to the 3 week k of doing a water change, it
will start to get a different algae on the plants only, this algae is sort
of a very dark red. I have a water test kit and nitrites, nitrates,
ammonia, etc. are all at good levels according to the kit. Why such a bad
algae problem and what can I do about it?

Jen,
If you choose to killfile me, that is your choice. It would be your
loss, as I have many years of experience and a wealth of knowldege for
anyone to use. However, unlike some people when I do not know
something, I either don't make a reply or outright say I don't know.
I don't ever try and make something up just to make a reply, or reply
to somebody just for the sake of making a reply (like some do) without
ever giving correct information.
I don't exactly like or agree with how Tristan posts about Koi-Lo,
Zebulon or whatever name she is using at the moment, but he did make a
point that was right. She has quite the habit of giving out wrong or
(so often) incomplete information and wanted to exapand on his point
about that.
For years she has been doing this and then when she's corrected or
told that much more info was needed she whines about how she is being
attacked or when somebody disagrees with her she's being attacked or
that only *my* info is correct. What she doesn't know is that I speak
of facts (which can easily be checked) or when I make an opinion, I
say it's my opinion. She uses her opinion as facts all too often. She
also makes no distinction between them. A newbie would not know the
difference, and many times they need to.
I'm not going to waste anymore space on her, as anyone that actually
reads her rantings can see how she manipulates words, or phrases and
turns it around on the person she is replying to. It's one of her
specialties. Refer to her reply to me in this very thread. She says :

Nope. However, it was bait for an argument (which I refuse to take).
This has gone on for many years and it doesn't appear that she will be
stopping unless the group is moderated.

It sure is nice to know that I am not seeingthings that are not
there....thank you Tynk thank you Carol has done exactly as you state
and how I and others have perceived for years on end, even back when
she used the nym of Windsong.....Big difference in FACT and OPINION,
and newbies do not have to deal with opinions they need facts first
off. then let em deal with their opinion.

I can't say the same after the "expensive" food experience of last Year. I
should never have taken the advice given me and stayed with the food the
fish thrived on.

Well I have youy beat in the years department sucker and folks are
still responding to me every day, and I am not counting my socks

I think Tara Legale's algae problem arises form her dropping food into
the tank and adding nutrients. Seems somneone that weighs as much as
she does at her height would have to be constantly shoving food in
their mouth. 280 pounds 4'9" and she brags that is nbot her heaviest
weight....duh! She needs to be worrying more on lipo suction and a
big tummy tuck than algae ina fish tank.......Eats pancake syrup for
energy....one sick old idiot badly overdue slaughter. Hogs here are
slaughtered at 250 pounds whats your excuse Tara......Fat obesse
people are pityfull almost as pityful as CArol Gulley is. Maybe if yu
chow down on that algae you would not be getting as much nutrients
yourself!........Does rolling to get where you want to go have any
added benefits over walking? Inquiring minds want to know! I bet its
been a long time sinc eyu r able to wipe yur ass without help, huh? I

To make it brief. A person (Jabriol) invaded rec.ponds 2 years ago to troll
the group and get even with me. I've been a poster there since 1996 without
a problem. Roy Tristan Hauer aka ~ROY~ , then posting on rec.ponds, joined
Jabriol and decided he wanted me (and a few other people) to leave the
groups he was posting on. He viciously attacked us, slandered us, used
obscenities and finally lost his ISP for abuse, as did Jabriol. I refused
to comply with Tristan's wishes and he can't accept that. He thinks he
should have the authority to decide who can who can't post on unmoderated
public groups. He is free to start his own moderated groups. Rec.ponds
suffered flooding, impersonations, anonymous posters, off-topic trash etc
ever since. Now Tristan is bringing his "war" to this group and the
goldfish group (and others where he's ignored.) Look at rec.ponds and see
who is constantly attacking, degrading and slandering who there......... I
have no idea what Ed or Gail or Derek or his other victims did to him to
suffer his constant abuse whenever they post a message.
I have no intention of leaving these groups after 11 years to please a
person like him.

on THIS group from other posters, from websites other's recommended and from
the Fish magazines. What works for YOU may not have worked for me. If
anyone disagrees with YOU, you have a hissy fit. I've seen you do it with
other people besides myself. It's like one or two of you have one way of
doing things and anyone who disagrees or has a different way of doing things
is verbally abused and attacked. I was verbally abused and attacked by
someone like you (maybe it was you) several years ago when I had the
AUDACITY to question UGFs!!!! They were all the rage but I had gotten rid
of mine. I was told I was wrong. I needed to read such and such a website
etc. Now that they're out of favor everyone agrees with me on that issue.

Well its the facts and only the facts that nee dto be presented CArol
and yur creatin and presentation of facts is pityfull considering what
yu suggest.like feeding Wal t CAt food to your fish as its cheaper
and does better than certified koi food........and how doing your
laundry inthe pond has no adverse affect on bio loads.......and how
you can simply toss in a fish without acclimating it as you know it

Oh really, if I had more time I would gladly google up a substantial

cyanobacteria or slime algae.... whatever you want to call it.
I've had a fight with all sorts of algae for the last several years
(6yrs?). That BGA sure makes a mess out of things. I have tried every
remedy I know of or heard of. FOR ME it has come down to two things,
actually three. You can tear the tank down and restart and hope for
the best...... use some death in a bottle available at any local
*t, like my buddy does (and seems to work)...... or change your
lighting. I've changed mine till I was tired of fooling with it.
Different color temps, varying duration, intensity, etc.... etc.... I
finally bought a timer with multiple setpoint for purely selfish
reason. So I could see my tank lit before and after work and still
only get 10-12 hours of light. Now it runs from 7am to 11am and from
5pm to 10pm. That's nine hours of light. But, what the!? No algae.
ever. Go figure.
Take that for what it's worth.

There is another alternative, accept the algae as a natural part of
the aquatic environment. One of my tanks has been slowly growing red
amoeba along the water/gravel line. I worried for the first year, but
seeing no problem caused by them, I have decided, they too, are a
natural part of the system. Snails too.
We all fight for some idealized perfection without considering
accepting what is natural.

More and larger partial water changes and a few small algae eaters called
otos. Does your gravel need a good vacuuming? Maybe try vacuuming the
gravel more often also.

Many of the regs and the highly knowledgeable hobbyists either have
you killfiled or won't even come here anymore because of YOU.
That leaves only a few brave people who will acutally put up with the
crap you put us through when you need to be corrected or finish giving
the info you neglected to.
Don't tell me to put you in my killfile, as you are the one that needs
help with your info. Not always, but over the years it has been often.
You are quite knowledgeable when it comes to Goldfish. I give you all
the credit you deserve there. But when it comes to some other things,
not so much.
It takes a big person to say ok...I did not know that, and learn from
it instead of constantly arguing the same lame information.
Being that you are not that type of person, you don't ever learn. You
refuse to and then argue about it.
I hope this group becomes moderated soon too.
You don't want that to happen to this or the other groups because you

in mine (along with Tristan and all of their sockpuppets), all I see are
others' responses to her. Every once in a while I have to adjust it to take
into account the nym-shifting but it is a small price to pay to keep from

Every time I do a water change it is done by doing a vacuum. This tank has
been around for 5 years. The only thing I changed about a year ago was not
having live plants any longer. They don't sell them locally, and I wasn't
having much luck keeping the ones I bought online, alive for more than a few
months. I even added one of those devices for plants... slips my mind what
they are called. Live plants certainly helped. And you know, when I vacuum
the gravel (actually crushed glass) there isn't much to be vaccumed. I
really come away with mostly tinted water.

Crushed glass isn't the best bottom for live plants. Java moss and hornwart
should do OK as they don't root in and will starve out algae. Leave the
lights on at least 10 hours a day. Are there no Petst or Superpet stores
where you live? Almost any store that sells aquarium fish sells water
plants. Make sure they're not those houseplant cuttings some unscrupulous
places sell. Know what you're buying. :-)

who may take the false or incomplete info she gives out and think it's
correct. By the time something goes wrong, they wouldn't know what
caused it or who told them what.
Newbies are bombarded with all sorts of things they are told...whether
wrong or right, they are hit like a ton of bricks and their heads are
left spinning.
You see, when somebody says something that isn't right, and a bunch of
others correct them, then they can assume who's got the right info for
them.
It's like having too much compassion for the newbies in the hobby.

easy to get in touch with Tynk via the valid email address she uses here
(afterall she has no need to hide from anything - like a few others of
us don't either).....I suggest you open one of her messages and then cut
and paste the "from" info.....write your email and hit send.....if it is
abusive then maybe she will do what most sane people do and ignore
it....if not, then as she invited you to mail her I'm reasonably sure
that she will respond.....However, one word of warning - Tynk actually
has a real life that doesn't revolve around Usenet every second of her
waking day - so there might be a bit of a delay in getting a reply
(sometimes days or weeks but that is entirely reasonable).....but then
the same applies to all of us who have a real life as well....If your
emails to Tynk bounce it is just because you have made a typo....

to get back to normality and am very tired about this.....
Do you know....having only lurked on rec.ponds for 2 - 3 years I never
realised that you were a hobbyist having seen you trashed so many
times.....I am extremely happy to know that you have a vested interest
in all of this rather than being a trolling hanger on (which I had been
led to believe) - I kind of got that when you posted on ngp in support
of rpm....but haven't had the opportunity to say it before....
Looking forward to exchanging ideas and discussions with you on a

The only reason I even bother is because of all the newbies out there
who may take the false or incomplete info she gives out and think it's
correct. By the time something goes wrong, they wouldn't know what
caused it or who told them what.
Newbies are bombarded with all sorts of things they are told...whether
wrong or right, they are hit like a ton of bricks and their heads are
left spinning.
You see, when somebody says something that isn't right, and a bunch of
others correct them, then they can assume who's got the right info for
them.
It's like having too much compassion for the newbies in the hobby.

I understand and appreciate why you are doing it, but there comes a point of
diminishing returns if it just sounds like the two of you are arguing (and
admittedly I'm no innocent, I've been involved in flame wars that could melt
diamonds). Anyone just stumbling upon the group at that time wouldn't know
which one was the credible party.
If you don't want to ignore her bad advice, countering it with the truth (as
you do) is fine. But you will do your frustration level a big favor by
ignoring her rants.
I pretty much had her pegged after reading no more then 4 of her posts, so I
think you will find that new readers of the group might not have as much
trouble as you think doing the same. One of the main caveats of USENET has
always been to read a group for a while before posting so as to figure out
the mores and morays (pun intended) of the group, and, by extrapolation,
figure out who are the signal producers and who are just the wankers that
produce noise.

all day when I'm at work, and turn it on at 5PM when I get home... off
around 11 or 11:30 when I go to bed.
I live in a small town and the closest big pet store is 100 miles. I
typically make one or two trips in the summer, never noticed any plants.
Will look when I drive there in spring.

at least 10 hours of good strong light.

If you do buy live plants get the low-light kind and do make sure they're
aquarium plants. Perhaps look up aquarium plants on Google, print out a few
pictures to take with you to make sure they don't get those worthless

untrue or (very often) gives incomplete information.
When somebody corrects her or posts the valid info she left out she

my opinion. Giving facts is not giving an opinion.
There's a huge difference there, and a newbie doesn't always know the
difference between them.
This is where the problem lies quite often with Zebulon (carol).
You will learn over time I'm not the bad guy here.
You're too new still and I believe you are thinking we are ganging up
on Zebulon. There are years worth of her acting like a doofus, and the
folks that have been around here for that long know all too well about
her.
Over time, you will also come to this conclusion. It's just a matter
of time.

Sure enough, she did and acted exactly as every one of those people

It's quite easy to know the difference. Facts can be checked via a
search. Also, if I state an opinion, I say *in my opinion* or IMO for
short. That way anyone new would be able to tell the difference.

That's wonderful.
However, newbies posting here that do not know any better may take
something that is somebody's opinion as fact, or something that is
incorrect as being true. I don't like leaving false, misleading,
incomplete info out there so some newbie could run into trouble.
When somebody other than she does the same, I will either correct it,
mention it's their opinion, or fill in the blanks like I always have.
Nobody ever has a problem with it, only her.
If you were reading a thread here and found false info, or very
incomplete info, and you knew better....wouldn't you post a reply to
fix it?
I would hope so.
This is how folks learn.
Sometimes it's new info to the hobby that was once thought to be
right, but isn't anymore.
Such as the nitrifying bacteria adhering to all surfaces in the tank.
It was once thought they were floating about in the water column
(which they are not) and that vacuuming the gravel would remove too
many of them during a cycling period (which it does not).
This info was recently learned within like the past 10 yrs.
For us that have been in the hobby for 30-50 + years, that was all new
to us.
The one inch of fish per gallon rule was learned many years ago to be
way too vague and useless for anything other than feeder gups, neons
and other fish of similar size. Too many variables dictate how many
fish can be stocked in X amount of gallons.
This is where correcting old, false info comes into play.

Certainly. But when you attack the other person, you lose credibility.
Just give your own opposing advice, that's all you need to do.

As have many other people and there has never been a problem before the
troll envision and slander started. I've been on and off this group since
1996. For all this so called "bad advice" (difference of opinion and
experiences actually) that I'm supposed to have given out "recently," I
haven't had one person take my advice and regret it.
I made the fatal mistake on disagreeing strongly here with one person and
sadly, that person can't let it go.
