Oh hey neighbor!
I'm about 45 minutes out of Chicago. =3D )
If you have Lake Michigan water, you're probably fine.
I have city well in my town and it's liquid rock. =3D (
I'm guessig since you've had yours for 3-4 weeks now you've already
done water changes with them.
This was when I had troubles. The slight difference in water chemistry
after a water change is what did mine in.
I tried with 3 different pairs, and each time they woud die after the
first water change.
Our town is getting ion exchange facilities because of the levels of
radium in it and it's said these will soften the water some. How much
so, we'll see. If it's enough to keep Blue rams again, YEA!! If not,
oh well. Back to not being able to.

I'm in Brookfield about 6 blocks from the Zoo.

Yes we have lake water. They were in the tanks at the LFS for a
couple of weeks before I grabbed them so I assumed they were healthy
and would do ok in our water.

I will let you know how it goes. I have had difficulty keeping some
soft water fish in the past. I have never had much luck with
cardinals for instance but the rummynose seem to do ok.

Very cool!
Are the frogs your daughter has the actual Clawed frogs, or are they
the Dwarf African Frogs?
I ask because they can get *very* large. You may have to hold onto
that 55g for them (depending on how many she has).
If it were the dwarves, they stay small.
I usually have seveal of the Dwarf variety in my household.
My daughter has had 3 for a very long time, but 2 of them recently
died. She still has one little female and I have to get her some more.
They prefer to have at least a few of their own kind around them, so
I'm sure being alone is miserable for her.
What kind of rams do you have in the 29? Bolivian or German Blue?
I love the Blue's. I once had a pair, but they do not tolerate hard
water at all. They acclimated just fine (using the drip method), even
spawned in tank/ However, after a water change they both died. I found
they are very sensitive to water changes and they're quite hard to
keep in hard water.
Many soft water fishes adapt quite well to harder water, but not so
much the Blues.
Your idea of giving fancy Goldies a 55g would be lovely (unless your
daughter's frogs don't need it).
Do you know how to tell the difference between the dwarf and true
clawed frogs?
I'm asking you about the frogs because I have seen (very often too!)
the 2 species labled incorrectly at many shops, or pet departments.

No, they are the big ones. I only have two of them in a 20 gallon and
I can already see that they might grow out of that! I was actually
thinking about using the 55!

I have the German Blue and so far they seem to be doing ok in my
Chicago water which is a bit hard. We shall see, I have not had them

My frogs started as tadpoles from Grow-A-Frog. They are without
question the large Xenopus. After a year the male is already 2-3
inches and the female 4 inches.

Hi, Yes I do.

I have 3 tanks. A 20 gal long that currently houses my daughters
African Clawed Frogs, a 29 gallon planted tank with a half dozen
rummynose and a pair of rams. I also have a 55 gallon which I
formerly used to house African cichlids, but it is dormant in my
garage right now. I was thinking of setting it up in my boys' room
with fancy goldfish.

I recently added 18 fish to three of my
tanks (6 per tank). I have one 30 gallon
long, three 20 gallon longs.

The new fish are young Corydoras
habrosus, less than 1/2" each. One of my
local fish stores finally got some in. I've
been waiting for about two years. I love
these "pygmy" cories but they're really
hard to find locally.

My tanks are all heavily planted and have
mostly small fish. The largest fish are two
YoYo loaches in one of the 20G tanks, and
I didn't put any of the C. habrosus in there.

I have four or five C. pygmaeus in the 30G
tank. I seldom see them. They like to hide
out in a C. wendtii "forest" at the back of
the tank. It's a pleasure to see them on
the rare occasions they come out while I
happen to be looking. I'm seeing them more
often now that they have similarly-sized
friends to hang with.

Other fish in all tank include various
regular-sized cories, otocinclus, several
different small tetras, kuhli loaches in the
30G, and Skunk botia in the 20Gs (not
the one that has YoYo loaches).

Looking at the tanks from a distance, you
tend to see only the plants. But I like it
like that.

They sound fun - I've not seen them around here (UK) either.....the
smallest cories usually on sale are the pandas - great for a small tank
and so full of character....

Good planning - the Yoyos would almost certainly outcompete the cories
for food...

Sounds like you love your bottom feeders - me too :-) Small tetras also
look great in large numbers in a planted tank as they weave in and out
of the plants. I've got around 20 Neons (along with a few rummy noses
and some flame rasboras) in my largest tank (135g) and they weave in and
out of the vallis all today.....I'm down to just two Neons in my 4 foot
tank at the moment (need to get some more) - yet the flash of colour is
great to see....

My 4 foot tank is a bit like that at the moment - got a rampant sword in
there that is taking over......I tend to stock the tank with brightly
coloured fish so that you get a flash of colour when they swim past - my
latest editions were 6 Orange Tiger Barbs - they just look amazing
against the lush green of the plants.....

I'm thinking I may add a few pandas to my 29 gallon tank. I need a few
corys or some freshwater inverts.

I've tried Pandas but killed them off. Not
sure what the problem was.

I forgot to mention that I have two African
Dwarf Frogs (the gray ones that stay small)
in the 30G. They're a lot of fun to watch.

YoYos are certainly very active! They are my
kittens' favorite entertainment besides catnip
toys. Fortunately the tops on the tanks are
quite secure. :)

Yep, I love the bottom feeders, mostly I
suspect because they are pretty hardy.
I really like dwarf Gouramis but for some
reason can't keep them alive for long and
gave up getting more several years ago. I
have a few Neon Tetras in one 20G and
I'd love to have more, but they don't seem
to do well. Or, like Otos, some do quite
well and others croak quickly.

That sounds lovely. I think if I were
starting all over again, I might do more of
what you did in terms of fish selection,
but I'm content with the fish I have.

I've heard that they can be delicate and will confess to having killed

with the Clown and Yoyo Loaches for food.....one day I will try them

Well, once established yes....I had quite a few losses when I first
started to keep Yoyos....and just don't talk to me about Clown Loaches
and ich :-(

I have also given up on the Dwarf Gouramis....but I did actually manage
to instigate some research by Practical Fishkeeping Magazine as to why
these fish are so short lived....the links are:-

I find that with Neons as well.....I lost loads to NTD when I first put
a school in the 6 foot tank....same with otos - if they survive the
initial acclimitization they then seem to go on forever....

It has taken over 2 years for me to be happy with the fish mix - the
tank has had a number of "configurations" fishwise - some down to deaths
but also on a more positive note through my moving them......what I did
was replace any losses with fish that I thought would fit in with the
plants rather than buying the same fish over and over.....

I have speckled Cories (I'm blanking on
their actual names) in with the YoYos and
the Cories do just fine. As do the Otos.
I probably tend to overfeed.

I'll bet they do! I have 6 cats, and it's only
the two kittens (now rather old kittens -
about 9 months) that use the tanks as a
kitten entertainment center. I suppose the
adult cats (2-6 years of age) are too
dignified for that. :)

Never had Clowns. Skunk botias do very
well in my tanks. I lost one once that got
stuck in an ornament before I noticed what
was going on, otherwise they just keep
chugging along. They do a nice job of
keeping the snails to a manageable level.
The kuhli loaches in my 30G are useless
in that regard (snails), but are so much fun
to watch I don't really care.

Thanks for the links. I hadn't known about
that virus. It could explain why I kept
losing dwarf gouramis. My water tends to
be on the hard side, and that might also be
a contributing factor.

Sounds like the process I went through.
I started out with a non-planted 10 gallon
and over the years upgraded to the
planted tanks I now have. Probably the
only fish species that stayed the same were
the cories.

A neat thing about reading these newsgroups
is that I got introduced to fish that I never
heard of before, that are common fish,
and do very well in my conditions. E.g.,
otocinclus and skunk botia. I believe I
also got into planted tanks by reading the
newsgroups. It's a cool hobby, whatever
choices one makes about plants & fish.

Oh, I have a buyer for my "ex" Petco setup . The local mom and pop LFS
here is wanting to purchase the entire nine yards from me, as they

They have 2 x 4 and plywood frames with ros of tanks setting on them
with a walk behind section to access plumbing etc......I had mentioned
I have the entire 9 yards from a Petco store setup in my barns feed
room (well I only have about 1/2 of it all setup) and they are most
interested in buying it ALL form me. I have nore tanks thanany one
person needs and by rights I probably could be a fish shop. I am
finding out there is a feasible limit with everything. So more than
likely it will start to get moved out of here next week or so.....

Seconded. Even on topic threads are hi-jacked by those who feel it
necessary to flame every post by the opposing side. It saddens me to
see knowledgeable people from other forums participating in this
nonsense.

I may be new to the hobby, but most of the people in the aquaria
newsgroups act as if they are new to Usenet.

Anyone participating in this ongoing flame war is at fault for ruining
these groups. Nobody's "cause" is worth the rendering the group

They're called "mission trolls." They can't accomplish what they want
unless they constantly harass the "target" person. It's aimed at harassing
certain people off these groups. They succeeded so far with with Tom, Gail,
Derek, Dick and many more.

Because they have a mission. That mission is to drive "certain" people off
and get others so disgusted they join their private Google group.

But you are part of the problem. You are as capable of ignoring their
posts as they are you.

I hope so. As someone who is new to this group and objective, I meant
for my message to strike a chord with those who really want to talk
about their aquariums.

Many of the groups I frequent have lots of off topic posts. But they
tend to be friendly discussions among people who have come to know
each other over years.
