I picked up some Corys from the LFS yesterday. Last night I noticed that one of them has a "pimple" just forward of its right pectoral fin, where the fin joins the body. The "pimple is off-white and about 1/16" in diameter. Would this thing be a cancerous growth or a parasite/disease? If it is something that would only affect that fish, that is OK, but I if it is something that will infect the other fish, then I want to take care of it. Thanks, Dave

Hi there. =3D ) Long time no post. I've talked to David via email about this and from what he described, it didn't sound like an injury. It's a shame he doesn't have a digital camera, as it would be so much easier to see a picture of the "pimple" like thing on this poor Cory. He told me that his other fish are fine, no signs of this and that his LFS said he could exchange this one for a different one. I told him to take a close look at every fish in the Cory tank and if anything is showing symptoms of disease or parasties to pass on them and that it would be better to get credit. A creamy/yellowish..raised bump can be several things, so without actually seeing it...very hard to say. Oh...it's just one single bump too. Personally, I've seen tumors that start out like that and there's some sort of parasite that can start out like too....I just forget what it's called. I had a Striped Rapheal cat have this odd parasite many years ago. It was the oddest thing. Started out like a raised, yellowy-creamy bump. Then it became a raised, fluid filled bubble. You could see that there was something inside the bubble, but being so small, I couldn't see whether it was like a bloodvessle or the parasite. I wish I could remember the name. I treated with Quick Cure for a while in a quarantine tank and he was fine.

Is the pimple raised? or does it look like a blister on the skin? Is there any fuzzy fungus type growth around it? Are there any other signs of spots/pimples on the fish? Is the fish feeding, swimming and behaving normally or is it showing any other signs that it is sick? What is the interior of the tank like? Do you have any sharp rocks, bits of wood or plastic fake plants? Do you have a heater guard? Basically, is there anything in the tank that the fish could have injured itself on? Are you able to go back to your LFS and take a look at the rest of the fish that are on the same water system for signs of similar symptoms? - not just the cories but all of the fish in the other tanks as well.... What other fish do you currently have in the tank? or is it just your cories? When it comes to the risk assessment it is necessary to know exactly what is at risk other than the fish in question. Another option is to set up a hospital/QT tank - if you have a small, free tank available.....this way you can observe the fish for further symptoms without putting the rest of your fish at further risk......If this is an option let us know and we can give you advice on the best way to set up such a tank Gill
