Subject: Bent Tetra
I've got a Cardinal Tetra that's bent vertically about the middle of it's
body. It looks like it's hinged about the stomach. This makes it difficult
to swim, so I imagine I will lose it eventually. I recently lost all my
Barbs (Rosey and Tiger) over the period of a few weeks, except for one
lonely Rosey Barb. I haven't replaced the Barbs as I don't know what killed
them and I'll likely get something more peacefull next time. The remaining
fish are two SAEs, three Yoyos, seven Cardinals and one Rosy Barb. I tried
to remove one sick Barb a few weeks ago, but the stress of the chase killed
it. I did not try to remove any more afterwards. The Barbs that died would
turn pale or get a whitish glaze a few days before dying. I did treat them
with Antibiotics twice, but this seem to do little to slow the progress of
their disease.

I did extensive water testing again yesterday and the only oddity was high
GH around 17. I'm wondering if the GH is the problem or if they are
suffering some kind of nutritional problem. I'm switching back to more
frozen bloodworms, to see what happens. The SAEs get veggie flakes as well.
They also get Spirulina pellets now and then.

I have had several fish of different species get the bent spine. They
all died after varying time periods. One lasted over a year. She was
a clever gal. Her float bladder also failed. She learned to swim to
the top then float down to the gravel. She learned to compensate for
her vision and could catch a flake of food. I grew to respect her
and ignore the obvious disability. Talk about having a will to live!

Did this Cardinal become bent in the spine just recently, or was it
bought like that.
I ask because it could be a sign of a couple things...malnutrition or
fish TB comes to mind.
SInce you've had other recent losses, I would be more careful here.
Fish TB has many symptoms, or just even none at all. Some fish can
have one symptoms, and another can one or more completely different
symtpoms. This is why it's hard to diagnose without ever having dealt
with it before (I have...not fun).
It is, howver, pretty common in the fish trade. It is not curable.
Fish can live out their entire lives being a carrier and never come
down with active symptoms, or they can show up at any time. It can go
from fish to human via a cut in the hand/finger that comes into direct
contact with infected water. It's not the same as human TB, is more
like a rash or open sore that won't heal or go away.
I knew a fish buddy that got a pretty bad infection from it that
lasted many months. That is very rare though.
I would advise you to do a broad search on fish with bent spine and
see what comes up. You'll probably find more info on the other causes
of bent spines, as well as info on fish TB.

Did this Cardinal become bent in the spine just recently, or was it

The Tetras are almost two years in my Tank. I originally had 8, but one just
disappeared. The latest injury happened within two weeks..

I was suspecting malnutrition, but the loaches eem to be off their food.

Thanks, I'll be careful of my cuts. Poor fishies. :-(

========================
One person I know found it was caused by a crack in the tank's heater.
There was current leaking into the water she said. Those with bent spines
didn't recover.

Not impossible, I did replace a broken heater under warranty a few months
back. I'll have to investigate.

Thanks.

Look carefully as it may be only a small hairline crack but that's all it
takes. There will no doubt be some moisture showing inside the tube if
water is getting in.
